Grey’s Anatomy Getting New Streaming Home After Years Of Netflix Domination

After years of dominating on Netflix, the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy is set for a new streaming home as part of a new deal.

Grey’s Anatomy will have a new streaming home in the U.S. after years of dominating on Netflix. The medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes is notable for its lengthy run on broadcast television. Despite regular cast changes and occasional downward trends in the ratings, Grey’s has nonetheless become a key player for ABC – in its most recent season, the Seattle-set soap was the network’s top-rated program in the 18-49 demographic. But it’s also a consistently strong performer in the streaming realm.

TVLine reports that Grey’s Anatomy will have a new streaming home in the U.S., as it will be available on Hulu starting in March 2024. Per a new deal, the streaming rights for the first 19 seasons of Grey’s will be shared between Hulu and Netflix. It will be available on the bundled Disney+ app, which will combine Disney+ and Hulu, in addition to the standalone Hulu app. However, Hulu will be the only platform that will offer the entire run of the series — including next-day episodes of the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy season 20.

Grey’s Anatomy Has Had A Strong Run On Netflix

Grey‘s has routinely been one of Netflix’s most-watched acquired shows, but in a specific example of the show’s dominance, in the week of September 25 to October 1, Grey’s experienced a jump in the Nielsen streaming charts that caught observers by surprise. The four-time Emmy-winning series leaped to second place with 958 million minutes viewed that week, a sizable increase from the 779 minutes it had garnered just a week prior.

There were no new episodes, which would have helped explain the jump. Similarly, there were not any significant headlines around the ABC staple that could serve as a reason for the spike in interest. To have such a notable sprint to the top, with seemingly no strong outside factors to explain the increased interest, speaks to the specific value of Grey’s as a streaming title.

It also, potentially, points to some safety for the future of the series. Although the spinoff Station 19 is ending with season 7, the streaming performance of Grey’s Anatomy and its reliability as a library title may well be a considerable factor in convincing executives to keep the story of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital going for a few additional seasons.
