Henry Cavill’s New Movie Twist Makes Playing James Bond Even Less Likely

Henry Cavill’s chances of playing James Bond have decreased immensely after the twist revealed in the preview for his new spy movie, Argylle. Since at least 2018, buzz has grown about Cavill being the next actor to play the British Secret Service agent James Bond. Cavill previously auditioned to play Bond in the movie Casino Royale, providing a tremendous performance. However, director Martin Campbell told Express UK that the actor lost out on the role because he looked too young to play the chiseled, charming spy.

Years later, Cavill is one of the many fan-favorite actors out of the running for James Bond. This is due to numerous factors, the most recent being his upcoming spy role in Argylle. Because of the movie’s genre, Cavill’s chances of playing 007 have gone down. However, the newest revelations about his role provided by the most recent trailer put an end to any lingering possibilities.

Argylle’s Story Deceit Makes Henry Cavill Playing James Bond Very Difficult

The preview for Argylle pretty much confirms that the character Agent Argylle is a parody of James Bond. The spy wears suits, drinks martinis, and has an affinity for charming pretty women. He’s also semi-fictional within the movie, only existing due to the in-universe author, Elly Conway. By taking on this role, Cavill put the nail in the coffin for the possibility that he’ll ever play 007. That may not be a bad thing, though, as he already had a very low chance of playing the famous British spy anyway. Now he’ll still get to shine in a similar project — and even poke fun at the role that got away.

Why Henry Cavill Playing James Bond Was Already Unlikely

Before taking a role in Argylle, Henry Cavill already had a low chance of playing James Bond for two primary reasons. Firstly, he’s acted in massively popular spy movies before. In the 2015 spy film The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Cavill played CIA agent Napoleon Solo, a role which he could reprise in the sequel, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. 2. Additionally, the actor played August Walker in the 2018 movie Mission: Impossible – Fallout, adding one of the most popular spy franchises outside of James Bond to his acting resume.

Secondly, Cavill wouldn’t likely play James Bond because he’s associated with too many prominent roles and franchises. The actor took on the popular DC Comics character Superman, playing him in five DCEU movies. Cavill also acted as the famous detective Sherlock Holmes in the Enola Holmes movies. Perhaps most notably, he played Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher. Considering the sheer number of well-known roles he’s taken on, it would be impossible for viewers to see Cavill as just James Bond without thinking of other massive franchises. As such, his James Bond parody, Argylle, will have to be enough.
