Grey’s Anatomy: 20 Things That Don’t Make Sense About Callie + Arizona’s Relationship

They used to be totally in love, and although they did split up a while before each character left the show, fans still ship them these days.

When people start talking about the TV drama Grey’s Anatomy, it seems impossible not to say, “Are there any characters even left on this show?!” That might sound melodramatic… but honestly, so many people have exited the series that it’s hard to even remember who is still a doctor at the hospital.

Two of the most popular characters who are now long gone are Callie Torres (played by Sara Ramirez) and Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw). They used to be totally in love and in a super serious relationship, and although they did split up a while before each character left the show, fans still ship them these days.

Here are 20 things that don’t make sense about Callie and Arizona’s relationship on Grey’s Anatomy.

20 Arizona Kisses Callie In A Totally Random Way

When Arizona kisses Callie before they start dating, it’s totally random and can’t really be considered all that romantic. It’s in a washroom at Joe’s, the bar that all of the characters go to.

This doesn’t make any sense because why wouldn’t this kiss be in a more interesting location?

19 It Takes Them Forever To Actually Date

Arizona doesn’t think Callie is really ready for their relationship… but we have to wonder why they didn’t just start dating after that kiss?

This is definitely something weird that happens on TV that doesn’t happen in real life. We’re so happy to meet someone cool and we can admit that we like them… but on TV, that’s not the case. Sure, it’s done to make things more dramatic, but it’s still a bit frustrating.

18 They Don’t Seem To Really Understand Each Other

Callie and Arizona disagree on a lot of things, like George wanting to be in the military. It doesn’t make sense that they don’t really seem to understand each other most of the time.

Sure, opposites attract. But these two seem way too opposite in terms of how they view certain situations.

17 Arizona Leaves Callie Behind To Live In Africa

In season 7 of Grey’s Anatomy, Arizona leaves Callie behind to live in Africa. This is a storyline that doesn’t make any sense because if they were so crazy in love, how could they possibly be apart?

It’s true that Callie was going to go, too, but they fight and Arizona actually dumps her before heading to Africa. Um… why?! Why can’t these two just stay together?!

16 They’re Both So Melodramatic About Everything

It’s definitely true that the majority of the doctors on Grey’s Anatomy could be considered melodramatic. They freak out at the drop of a hat and are often dealing with a lot of romantic tension, feelings, and issues.

Callie and Arizona are especially dramatic, and when they’re together, they seem to get really worked up about pretty much everything.

15 They Only Get Engaged Because Of A Car Crash

It’s true that a big event (especially one that’s awful like a car accident) will make you realize what’s important and meaningful in your life. It can lead to some big decisions. But Callie and Arizona only get engaged after a car crash, and this is confusing. Why didn’t they tie the knot before that happened?

14 They Don’t Respect Each Other’s Decisions About Kids

Before you get married, it’s a really smart idea to have the “do we want kids?” discussion. It’s a huge deal if your partner doesn’t and you do or vice versa.

Callie wants kids and Arizona doesn’t, and they make this whole situation really dramatic and full of conflict. They don’t seem to respect each other’s decision here, and that’s confusing since they seem to care about each other. They should be able to face the subject in a more mature way.

13 Callie Thinks Having Mark’s Child Is No Big Deal

In season 7, Callie is going to have Mark Sloan’s baby… but she truly thinks that this is no big deal when it comes to her relationship with Arizona.

While anything can be worked out if two people love and care about one another enough, it’s tough when one person wants kids and the other doesn’t, and they have to work through this issue.

12 Arizona Gets Mad That Mark Is Involved, Which Is Immature

Once Arizona and Callie are a couple once again, it’s clear that they have to have a third person involved in their relationship: Mark, the father of Callie’s baby.

Arizona gets mad, which really doesn’t make any sense. Of course Mark is involved because, number one, this is the way they’re having a baby, and number two, she told Callie that she didn’t want to be a mom and they were broken up.

11 Their Custody Battle Is Heartbreaking To Watch

When Callie and Arizona were together, it would have been tough for fans to picture them going through a custody battle. When this happens, it’s heartbreaking and tear-inducing and just awful.

Sure, there’s a happy ending here since Arizona gets custody and wants to do shared custody (thankfully). But the storyline was weird. Why would they do this to each other (and to their daughter)?

10 After The Plane Crash, Arizona Thinks It’s Callie’s Fault

Arizona honestly acts like it’s Callie’s fault that she lost her leg after the plane crash, which is so frustrating to watch… and so confusing. This is something that makes no sense about their relationship.

Instead of admitting that it’s tough and it’s going to take time to deal with her new reality, Arizona is mean to Callie about this subject.

9 They Let Their Relationship Totally Fall Apart

Of course relationships are hard. But if you’re truly in love, you help each other and support each other and make it work.

That sadly can’t be said of Callie and Arizona. It just doesn’t make any sense that they claim to be in love but let their relationship fall apart. They let things get so bad that it doesn’t seem like they really can get back together.

8 Why Would Arizona Want To Be With Someone Else?

Arizona really upset fans of Grey’s Anatomy when she slept with Hilarie Burton’s character, Lauren Boswell. This was so awful and it’s so hard to believe that she would do this to Callie.

After everything that they had experienced as a couple, she had to do this? Really?! It made zero sense at the time and honestly makes even less sense now.

7 Arizona Even Dates Someone Else Again Right When They’ve Broken Up

Arizona and Dr. Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampina) have a romantic storyline, and it’s confusing that she would date someone after breaking up with Callie.

Breakups aren’t that easy to get over and it’s especially tough to move on from a very long-term relationship. It’s strange that this character wouldn’t wait a really long time before she would be ready to date again.

6 They Split Up And Reunite Way Too Many Times

Sure, breakups make for dramatic storylines on a long-running TV drama. And yet it’s frustrating to watch Callie and Arizona keep breaking up and getting back together.

On the one hand, we’re supposed to believe that they have an epic love story. On the other hand, we keep watching them hurting each other and splitting up.

5 Callie’s New Relationship With Penny Is A Bad Idea

Since Penny Blake is the doctor who let Derek be killed, it’s way too complicated for Callie to date her. It’s heartbreaking and it also doesn’t make any sense in terms of Callie and Arizona’s relationship.

Fans watched Callie with her new partner and wondered why Callie and Arizona couldn’t get back together.

4 Arizona Seems To Have Tons Of Crushes That Aren’t Callie

In recent seasons, Arizona has crushes on a lot of different characters, from Hilarie Burton’s character Lauren Boswell to Leah Murphy (Tessa Ferrer) to DeLuca’s sister.

It’s tough for fans to see Arizona crushing on so many people when it seems like she should always be with Callie. (Sigh. Big sigh.)

3 They Don’t Make Big Decisions Together

From Callie moving away with Sophia to having a kid, Callie and Arizona seem to make decisions separately while they’re broken up. Then, when they randomly get back together, they have to handle the weight of those choices.

Why not just stay together and make the decisions as a couple?!

2 Callie Is Content To Move Away And It Makes Zero Sense

Fans know that Callie and Arizona are meant to be together, so when Callie and Penny are heading to NYC, it’s confusing and makes zero sense.

It seems like the idea of this move would make Callie come to her senses and realize that, no, she doesn’t want to go to NYC. She wants to stay in Seattle and be with Arizona.

1 Wouldn’t Arizona Move To Be Near Callie And Their Child?

Once it’s clear that Callie isn’t kidding around and really has moved away to NYC, it’s weird that Arizona wouldn’t go, too. Wouldn’t she want to be with their daughter?!

Now that Arizona has left the series, fans think that the couple could start their love story all over again. We honestly hope so.
