‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 20 Cast, Return Date and Everything to Know

The Grey Sloan crew is finally ready to scrub back in — find out when the new season premieres

Now that the writers’ and actors’ strikes are over, Grey’s Anatomy is cleared to return for Season 20 on ABC, and we finally have a premiere date.

The Season 19 finale left us with one attending coding on the floor of the OR, two rogue residents, a couple of make-out sessions and another Catherine Fox Award-winning doctor. While the Season 19 finale couldn’t be classified as typical Grey’s Anatomy, it did leave us worried about multiple doctors physically and professionally. So we’ve compiled everything we know about the upcoming season.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 release date

TLDR: Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 will premiere Thursday, March 14.

THE DETAILS: Grey’s Anatomy typically premieres in late September or early October, but the strikes put the show on ice for six months, along with hundreds of other shows and movies. But now that the SAG-AFTRA strike is over, ABC has set return dates for its strike-delayed series. Grey’s Anatomy will scrub back in on Thursday, March 14 at 9/8c, after the network premiere of 9-1-1 at 8/7c and the Season 7 premiere of Grey’s spinoff Station 19 at 10/9c.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 cast

TLDR: Many favorite cast members including Chandra Wilson, Camilla Luddington, James Pickens Jr., and more will return for Season 20.

THE DETAILS: The following cast members have signed new contracts and will return for Season 20, per Deadline.

  • Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey. Bailey just won the Catherine Fox Award for her work in women’s medicine. She will continue to mentor the new interns and run her clinic.
  • James Pickens Jr. as Richard Weber. Weber is still head of the residency program, but the Season 19 finale revealed he might be heading for an alcohol relapse after years of being sober.
  • Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt. Hunt has re-secured his medical license and heads up the trauma department at Grey Sloane. He is married to Teddy Altman.
  • Kim Raver as Teddy Altman. The Season 19 finale ended with Teddy flatlining in the OR due to a cardiac event after spending all day complaining about a toothache. It remains to be seen what will happen to Teddy in the new season. She is the new chief of surgery and is married to Hunt.
  • Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson. Jo is a former general surgery attending and now OBGYN resident. She is best friends and now lovers with Atticus Lincoln.
  • Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd. Amelia is the head of neuro at Grey Sloan and Meredith Grey’s sister-in-law.

Probably returning

The following cast are expected to return for Season 20 but have not officially renewed their contracts to appear yet.

  • Chris Carmack as Atticus “Link” Lincoln. Link is the head bone surgeon at Grey Sloan and is in love with Jo Wilson. He finally confessed his feelings for her in the Season 19 finale and the two are going to give a relationship a shot.
  • Anthony Hill as Winston Ndugu. Winston and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) separated in Season 19 when she left to take a job in Chicago. He was promoted to head of cardio in her stead.
  • Jake Borelli as Levi Schmitt. Schmitt is co-chief resident and one of the only surviving members of his resident class.
  • Jaicy Elliott as Taryn Helm. Helm rejoined the Grey Sloan staff at the end of Season 19. She has a major flirtation with a junior resident, but is now co-chief resident with Levi.
  • Midori Francis as Mika Yosuda. Yosuda is the junior resident that has romantic feelings for Helm. She also stood up to get better working conditions and pay for the residents in Season 19. She lives with two of her co-workers in Meredith’s old house.
  • Niko Terho as Lucas Adams. Lucas is a member of the Shepherd family (Amelia is his aunt). He discovered he has ADHD at the end of Season 19 and is romantically involved with Griffith. The two performed an unauthorized surgery in the Season 19 finale, leading to the death of a patient.
  • Alexis Floyd as Simone Griffith. Simone left her fiancé to be with Lucas in the Season 19 finale. She’s a caring resident, but she and Lucas performed an unauthorized surgery that may cause the end of their careers.
  • Harry Shum Jr. as Benson “Blue” Kwan. Kwan is the Cristina (Sandra Oh) of the new residents – ruthlessly ambitious, but he has a soft spot for patients being taken advantage of by the medical industrial complex. He also has serious feelings for Jules.
  • Adelaide Kane as Jules Millin. Jules is also a junior resident with a fond attachment to her 80-year-old roommate, Max. She was secretly hooking up with Kwan for most of Season 19.

Not returning as series regulars

Ellen Pompeo and Kelly McCreary exited Grey’s Anatomy as series regulars in Season 19. However, both Meredith and Maggie returned for the finale and could drop in to Season 20 for guest appearances at any time.

Will Scott Speedman return?

Scott Speedman has not yet signed up for more episodes. The Season 19 finale confirmed that Nick and Meredith are back together, but it is unclear if he will stay in Seattle and continue to oversee the residents or if he will move to Boston and return to the show in only special guest appearances.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 plot

TLDR: The series is getting a new showrunner.

THE DETAILS: Executive producer Krista Vernoff signed off as showrunner at the end of Season 19 after 5 seasons running the ship. Longtime writer Meg Marinis is stepping up to the role in Season 20.
