Luis Mendez, a 75-year-old resident of Middletown and resource officer for Middlesex Health’s security services, has made over 40 trips to Guatemala to provide vital medical supplies and training. His commitment to this mission is long-term, and he plans to continue until he is no longer able to do so.

Mendez’s first trip to Guatemala was in 2009, and he has been returning on average more than twice a year since then. He believes that frequent visits are necessary to maintain strong relationships and sustain change and improvements.

Empowering Communities Through Education

One of the main focuses of Luis Mendez’s mission in Guatemala is to assist the people in achieving their goals and bringing about the changes they desire. He is accompanied by volunteers, including students from Middletown Wesleyan University.

Kush Patel, a Wesleyan student studying to become a physician’s assistant, emphasizes the importance of listening and learning during their trips to Guatemala. He conducts CPR classes for nursing students, midwives, and others, promoting knowledge and skills that can save lives.

Jocelyn Velasquez Baez, another Wesleyan graduate, joined Mendez to fulfill her dream of serving underserved communities. She sees this opportunity as a perfect gateway to her fellowship in studying traditional medicine, contributing to the healthcare education in Guatemala.

Providing Essential Medical Supplies

In addition to offering training and education, Luis Mendez and his volunteers also provide essential medical supplies to the communities in Guatemala. Mendez funds his own travel and accommodations, as well as the purchase of medical supplies.

During their trips, they have taught CPR and conducted various trainings, including prenatal care for midwives. Their efforts have made a significant impact on improving healthcare in Guatemala.
